Cooperation with Fraunhofer IPT

The collaboration centers on the production of ATMPs

The kickoff for the cooperation was the signing of the cooperation agreement on November 14, 2023. On the left: Niels König, Fraunhofer IPT. On the right: Christian Kollecker, Harro Höfliger.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT and Harro Höfliger have entered into cooperation to develop fully automated ATMP production lines. ATMPs (Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products) are pharmaceutical products that contain living cells or the nucleic acids DNA or RNA. The requirements for quality, safety and efficiency in production are particularly high for this new class of medicines – which is why the cooperation also aims to ensure these standards are met.

Technical expertise from research is to be transferred to the production and sale of individualized medical products. The joint program will extend from consulting, analysis and product development, to serial production of fully automated production lines.

Fraunhofer IPT's tasks within the collaboration mainly involve the process development of commercial cell production. Scientific studies, the risk assessment of biological production and the development of new software and hardware solutions for ATMP production lines also play an important role. Another option under consideration is the construction of fully automated cell production lines.

Harro Höfliger will translate the development output into series production of lines and – as the industrial partner – will take over worldwide sales and customer support as well as maintenance services for the individual machines at the end customer.
